Killer Clown – Tormented / Silentium Review

kcDeep within man dwell these slumbering powers

Powers that would astonish him

That he never dreamed of possessing

Forces that would revolutionize his life if aroused and put into action.

50% of Noisecontrollers delivers a massive release on Superplastik. The long awaited Killer Clown tracks are finally out. Arjan Terpstra gives us a quality release which is very professionally made and which differ from many other recent hardstyle releases. If you’re after high quality nu-style with fresh sounds – then this is what you should get.

Both tracks have sounds which you will recognise from previous Noisecontrollers releases. The synths and screeches are similar to the ones that Noisecontrollers use, which really isn’t that odd since Arjan Terpstra is a member of the successfull dutch duo. The kicks however, sound very different from the typical Noisecontrollers kicks.

Tormented, which is the a-side, has kicks which sound a bit bland and like they lack power. You really don’t get blown away by them and you don’t go “WOW” like they are extremely good and something special that you have never heard before. These kicks…I get a feeling that I’ve heard them before and I expected a bit more to be honest, since Noisecontrollers usually use really heavy and hard hitting kicks. This goes for both the kicks in the intro and in the climax of Tormented. Speaking about the intro. It’s pretty boring and nothing special and I would have loved to hear a cool bassline instead of empty kicks combined with some boring sounds. The intro is just not exciting at all.

The melody and climax part in Tormented is unlike the kicks and intro, very good. It gives you a bit of a mysterious feeling which is very good and in combination with the mysterious vocals and very good synth, it creates a really good track atmosphere. Tormented is overall a pretty decent track but with harder and more powerfull kicks and a more exciting intro with a nice bassline, it would have been a lot better.

Now over to the b-side.

Let’s start with the kicks in Silentium. Unlike Tormented, this track has deeper kicks which contains more power and drive. They are still far from the standard, hard Noisecontrollers kicks but way better than the kicks in Tormented.

The intro has a nice bassline with really good screeches and there’s no real break in this track – just pounding hardstyle all the way. The melody is just like in Tormented, a bit mysterious and really good. Half of Silentium’s melody is very similar to Bass Modulators – Indeep, though Arjan Terpstra stated that he never even had heard Indeep and that the melody was inspired by something else.  The synths in both Tormented and Silentium, are both pretty trancy but still very good and suitable for both melodies. Silentium also has some pretty neat, mysterious sounding vocals which contributes to the great track atmosphere.

Silentium is by far the best track in this release.

To sum everything up: this is a good release which is slightly better than all other nu-style releases these days, though Tormented is in need of better kicks and a better intro. Silentium is the winner of this release and keeps a good drive through the whole track and has a really awesome melody. Both tracks are good productions and really well made.

Tracklist:
