Interview: Sei2ure (The Netherlands)
Sei2ure (Jan Kamphuis) is an industrial hardcore producer from The Netherlands who has had releases on some of the biggest labels in the scene, including Enzyme & Symp.tom. When I hear people talking about industrial hardcore, one of the first names that is mentioned is Sei2ure. He is a very well respected producer whose tracks are played regularly by the best names in the industrial scene. In 2005, Sei2ure finished his BA in Music Composition and Production at the HKU in The Netherlands. Sei2ure had his first track Pneumatic Transmisson released through Enzyme in 2004, and his first solo release through Enzyme in 2007. Sei2ure has now moved to Symp.tom where he made another solo release in 2010, which has been received very well by critics and fans. I wish to thank Jan for taking the time to do this interview with me – I know there are going to be quite a few people who will enjoy reading it.
THV: Who are your main influences?
Sei2ure: I’ll give you an incomplete and quite distorted overview since this is quite a difficult question to me. Hardcore wise I listened a lot to Ophidian. His tracks are just a little better in almost every aspect than those of other producers. His discography is very impressive, top producer. Other influences are Ruffneck, Eye-D, Synapse and some other obscure and strange artists nobody knows about
THV: Was your time with Enzyme Records memorable?
Sei2ure: Yes it was. I took my first steps in the strange world of hardcore there. I learned a lot there.
THV: Do you prefer live sets or DJ sets?
Sei2ure: I started out as a producer and after a while I started doing live performances too. DJing is relatively new to me. I’ve started to like it more and more. It makes you focus on the large scope instead of freaky edits and all that. On the other hand with a live-act you can do real bizarre stuff. There are no rules. I don’t know which of them I prefer really. Ask me again next year maybe I’ll know by then.
THV: How would you describe your style?
Sei2ure: Smooth Jazz with a twist.
THV: Do you structure your tracks to fit in at parties?
Sei2ure: Yes I do. My music is intended for large halls with large sound systems. That’s what I have in mind when I’m making music. On the other hand I try to put in some stuff you might not hear in a crowded club. Nowadays I try to have the DJ in mind too. A track needs to be mixable and the climax shouldn’t be at 5.45 while the tracks ends at 6 min – that kind of stuff. Then again I need to be an engineer as well. The mix should be tight and punchy. So many things to keep in mind while making noise!
THV: Which artists inspire you to keep making music?
Sei2ure: At the moment Eye-D is a real inspiration. He’s been around for a long time and knows a lot about a lot. I’ve learned a lot from Ruffneck as well.
THV: What was it like working with Ruffneck in the studio?
Sei2ure: Ruffneck is very dedicated. The music needs to make sense. If something in the mix is wrong for example, it needs to get fixed or otherwise there will be no release. I like that attitude. I’ve been in his studio once and we had been working on a mix for 8 hours straight. We would go for a coffee and come back to listen once more. Then he pulled all the faders down and said “this mix is no good, let’s start again”. It’s tough but sometimes it’s the only way to get the sound you have in mind. I also like his musical approach. Producing electronic music can become something very technical. You need to make a balanced mix, have a solid kick and master everything until it sounds good on all possible sound systems. All very technical stuff. But in the end the most important thing to ask yourself is; does this track sound interesting or is this good music?
THV: You have a very big following in Australia, do you like the attention you receive on the other side of the world?
Sei2ure: Yes I do. I don’t make music for the sake of it. It’s very nice if people feel the energy you put in your music. But to be honest I don’t notice a lot of the attention in Australia. You are the first to tell me about it really. I didn’t know you guys like it so much!
THV: Would you like to play in Australia one day?
Sei2ure: Of course. I’ve never been there and your country seems very beautiful. It would be nice to see how you guys respond to the noise I make
THV: A message for the fans?
Sei2ure: Thanks for your support, I hope to come visit you very soon and perform for all of you!
