Headhunterz – The Fear Of Darkness Review
Mr. Headhunterz is once again back with a new release on Scantraxx Reloaded. Has he finally done something really mindblowing and good? Has he changed his style and made something that will give you goosebumps because it’s so good? The answer is a resounding no . Once again he has made two typical, boring nu-style tracks which really don’t affect you at all. It’s slightly better than his previous release (which was horrible) and it seems like Headhunterz actually tried to make something a bit more original this time but failed. He has changed his kicks from the usual metallic TOK TOK kicks to something new and better. That is one of the very few good things in this release. Otherwise it’s rather bland and boring.
Let’s start with The Fear Of Darkness. The intro is basically just some random screeches combined with a boring kick and it’s nothing special at all .
After a couple of minutes of boringness, a typical long nu-style break starts. The vocals in the break are really deep and mysterious and they create a good atmosphere which makes you gather all your “go wild energy” and you’re just waiting to let yourself go fucking wild. After a while a pretty decent melody kicks in combined with an average synth which is neither good or bad. It’s OK but nothing peculiar. The climax starts and this is where the good things come to an end.
The melody gets really boring and messy after about a minute. Why didn’t he just change the melody a bit more in the second climax? The track could have been alot better if he had done that and you wouldn’t have to think “oh please just let the climax end”
Oh and what about the kicks? Well…no TOK TOK kicks but they are certainly not that overwhelmingly good.
Let’s see what the b-side has to offer.
A New Day is slightly better than the a-side but it still doesn’t give you any “WOW!” effect.
Yes, as many people have mentioned, the intro does sound very similar to Noisecontrollers – Shreek, except that the Shreek intro is alot better than this one. In the beginning of the intro, some kind of break kicks in which contains the main melody and it makes you a bit confused. What? Does the climax start now? Huh?
This side also has a break (surprise surprise!) which has the same mysterious vocals like the a-side. The melody is somewhat more uplifting and happy than in The Fear Of Darkness and the synth is also a bit more exciting. I really don’t have to tell you anything about the kicks, because they don’t differ much from the kicks on the a-side.
End conclusion: There is no real winner. Both tracks are rather average and bland nu-style tracks which will probably be forgotten in a short period of time. The production is not that good and Headhunterz could probably have done better. One + is that he finally changed his kicks.
Tracklist:
- A. Headhunterz – The Fear Of Darkness
- B. Headhunterz – A New Day

Underrated in my opinion
57? No way my friend, no way. This was actually a very good release, and they are both good tracks. They're better than B2BW anyway. Poor review.
Thomas ya coont. The Fear of Darkness might be quite a… nice track, but A New Day is such a shameless ripoff of Shreek that it really deserves -100/100. I'm with my man Carl on this rating. He'll have to correct some grammar mistakes though… eheh
My word, what a poorly written review! It nearly made me regurgitate my fine wine and cheese.
Nah, the rating is just wrong. Especially compared to the other ratings. It's just because the release is by Headhunterz, if it would have been someone else the score would have been higher. I mean come on, the Abyss & Judge vinyl got a 72, while this vinyl was at least as good. The score shouldn't be determined by the artist, but by the tracks, which I think didn't happen here. I really don't like the way Headhunterz is going, but I think this vinyl is a great step into the right direction.
haha, i completely agree with thomas.
its certainly not a 100/100 vinyl, but it is by far better that 57/100. Dont judge by the artist, the next vinyl from bh will get just as low a review as this one. at the end of the day headhunterz isnt that bad, hes alrite…maybe a little nu-style…but…its still pretty decent
Again, just be happy we didn't give it a 0 (which I think it really deserves) for turning such a good track as Shreek into such a random collection of frequenties as A New Day.
Disagreeing with the review's opinion, doesnt make it a bad review.
moderate track.
I agree that both tracks still doesn't give you any WOW effect.
more like yea i've heard that before
I think it should be a 6.5 for the overall tracks
I presume my post is deleted because you have written a new review?!
True. But I think this is a bad review, not because I disagree, but because of the way the score was decided, and how the review was written.
I don't understand why do you people don't want to accept the reality. Only the old fans who are the minority like the old agressive, repetitiv and noisy hardstyle. All new fans like me want only the nustyle. If hardstyle didn't change to nustyl i think it would probably died (sory for bad english XD)
And headhunterz that you hate so much is one of the best DJ in nustyle. Just take the time to listen to “Hate it or love it” or “End of my existance” … They're just awesome : Melodic and when you hear it your head doesn't explose :S
My verdict : “The fear of darkness” 89 and “New day” 62 = 72
HEAAAADDDHUNNNNTERRRRRZZZZZ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3
You do not understand what we appreciate, hate, or love at all.
You see, there is good music and bad music. There is good oldstyle and bad oldstyle; there is good nustyle and bad nustyle. Headhunterz, as one of the pioneers of the real nustyle sound, used to be refreshing, and thus good. These days, he is lazy, makes the same boring old stuff, does not pay enough attention to composition, and is thus rapidly becoming bad.
The point of this site, then, is to point out musically sound releases to the people who actually listen to music with their brains; they listen to a track, analyze it, appreciate, love or hate it. If you are not prepared to make the effort to listen to a song, whatever genre it is, and single out its good and bad sides, compare them, and make a verdict using those proper arguments, then don't bother to reply.
On the 'doesn't make your head explose'-note: this kind of music is called HARD-style for a reason. And let me tell you something: the one thing the HARD-style scene does not need is brainless fanboys like you.
Please, do comment again, but think before you do so.
Sorry Ool I'm not a “barainless fanboys”. I took the time to analyse headhunterz new release and i'm not stupid to say that “the lost soul” or “A new day” are good songs. But it's not a reason to say he's a bad Dj and that all his songs are bad.
This is what the guy who did this review said : “…Has he changed his style and made something that will give you goosebumps because it’s so good? The answer is a resounding no.”
Do you mean by this that “Art of creation” one of Project one's best song isn't an awesome track that give you goosebumps ???!! If it doesn't give you this feeling, so let me tell you that you don't know how to apreciate good songs.
All i want to say is just when a Dj makes one or two bad songs doesn't make him a bad Dj.
And when i said “that make your head explose” i was talking about oooold tracks without any melodie inside. Only repetitive sounds with the same noisy kik.
Sorry english is my third national language and i'm only 16 yrs old that's why i couldn't express clearly what i wanted to say
I'm waiting for you answer :p
Right. Let's make one thing clear first: taste is personal, quality is not. Art of Creation might give you goosebumps, but Project 1 didn't make the melody themselves and the whole album was hastily finished and just did not sound polished. Hence, we have mixed feelings about it.
On the old tracks without melody – that's exactly what I was referring to when I said HARDstyle. It's hard, no bullshit. NUstyle may still be hard in some ways but it's way more accessible with all the silly melodies and whatnot.
what a heated exchange….haha
guys theres no need to pick up such a topic if all you are going to do is blatantly state your opinions. At the end of the day there is truth in both of your opinions..Headhunterz was a pioneer or nu-style, and yes he has come up with some good stuff in the past, but yes he has had a recent slump of form and productions. Porject One had some decent tracks on it, but as a whole, it did dissapoint as an album..3 good tracks on an album doesnt hit the spot, for an album that had quite a lot of people awaiting it.
Compared to Killer Clowns new release, that got a mere 85/100, headhunterz release doesnt deserve the same score, nor does it deserve the same review.
Carl actaually did a pretty good job, i mean, first up i didnt agree and thought that fear of darkenss deserved much better (a new day is just too happilly bland for me), but upon listening to the tracks a few times…the intro for both tracks does kind of suck..its an improvement from his previous vinyl, which was absolutely shithouse…the kicks changed a tiny bit, so there might actually be a light at the end of the tunnel….
and no hes not a bad dj…he just has a slump of form..he might release something new, but at the moment…he isnt where he was with his previous stuff.
… Ok this is my last comment cause i think we're not here to say what kind of hardstyle is better or if people appreciate HHz songs or not.
We're here to talk about headhunterz last release. And as i said “The fear of darkness” is an awesome track and i love it very much. ^^ I don't care if you like it or no. That's your opinions and i will not obligate you to love it. So like headhunterz said “Hate it or love it” XD
A new day. This track would never have been produced. I didn't know that the sound was the same as Shreek. And i think that's why so many people disliked it. Besides the synth used is somehow too lazy. It doesn't deserve it 16th place in top 40 of FearFm.
I hope headhunterz or Project one next released will be better ^^ (I'm waiting for P1 – Tba that sounds good
)
Okaaaay, you just said that the track ” A new day” had a confusing feel to it, but when rollin by frontliner did it, you wrote it had a nice new approach to it.
Mmk then…
You have a point, but we're two writers. This review was written by my colleague Carl, I did the one on Frontliner.
probably the fact rollin is a better track than new day helps
personally for HHZ this is a step in the right direction, away from the crap he has been producing recently, i liked the first stuff he produced, not loved it, but liked and would willingly listen to it, but these two tracks are still not hard enough, and follow pretty much the same structure of all his other nu-style tracks, if it had a bigger kick and climax? perhaps i would change my thought, i rank them probs 65/100
